Ongoing Local initiatives
Gainesville United Methodist Church (GUMC) is committed to serving right here in our community through regular service opportunities. From food pantry support to hands-on projects, these ongoing efforts are ways we live out Christ’s call to love and care for others in Northern Virginia.

Care 4 Community was established in 2023 to provide GUMC and other volunteers an avenue to be “the hands and feet of Christ” by working in or at local community partner organizations as they serve those in need within their respective communities. Some community partners we serve include Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, Community Touch, Inc., House of Mercy and Boxes of Basics. GUMC volunteers meet at the church the third Saturday of each month (except July and December), have coffee, donuts, take a picture and pray together before heading to their assigned organization to serve.
Serving Friends (formerly known as Feeding Friends) is the result of a 2016 initiative to provide GUMC volunteers a way to directly help homeless and needy individuals by distributing small meals, water, clothing and toiletries at sites in the area. Volunteers meet at Gainesville Church on Tuesday afternoons, assemble meals and pack all items onto the Serving Friends truck (“Gertrude”) then drive to the Manassas Presbyterian Church parking lot to serve those in need.
SERVE in Manassas is located on a campus that houses a variety of programs that help individuals receive the immediate assistance they need, such as food and shelter, and develops the potential for future success, including rapid re-housing, health and dental care, employment assistance, life skills classes and childhood education.
WILLING WARRIORS provides programs that positively impact the lives of wounded, ill and injured military service members and disabled veterans—providing them with a "taste-of-home experience." The services provided include post-traumatic stress counseling (for warriors, couples and families), counseling for female military sexual assault survivors, job skill training, entrepreneurial training, moral injury programming, military youth STEM programs, financial literacy training and career counseling. Volunteers participate in special events, beautification/service days and fundraising.
Youth for Tomorrow is comprised of adult volunteers who meet in the GUMC church fellowship hall on Wednesday afternoons (during the school year) to tutor young students having difficulty with various school subjects. We have openings for a few more tutors.
Red Cross meets at GUMC every other month on the 4th Saturday of the month from 8 am-1:30 pm for blood drive/donation. In the first nine months of 2025 we provided the space for them to acquire approximately 180 units of blood—which is enough blood to save 540 lives. The next upcoming drives are November 22 and March 28, 2026.
