Retreats are a vital component of our student ministry, as well as, I believe, a crucial part of our personal spiritual development.
At Gainesville UMC - we typically conduct four retreats per school year:
- Our Fall Retreat is a Disciple Now (D-Now) event that we traditionally hold at GUMC, with students staying at host homes provided by members of the church. This retreat is open to all of our youth, from 6th-12th grades and is also a great time for our youth to invite friends for a weekend of fun, games and fellowship without having to incur a high cost or travel hours away.
- In the spring, we have separate retreats for our middle school & high school students. Our middle school LifeGroup will be going to JOURNEY, the annual retreat hosted by the Jeremiah Project at Camp Rock Bridge in Goshen, Va. The high school LifeGroup will be headed to a destination retreat, this year it will be Bethany Beach, DE. While these trips require a bigger investment of time and money, they are also specifically geared to the needs of each LifeGroup and allow for deeper bonds and discussions within our youth community.
- Finally, we also take an annual Confirmation retreat. Our confirmands get to experience a wide-variety of styles of worship on this weekend retreat, in addition to learning more about Methodism and UMC history. Our confirmands will travel to Philadelphia and New York City, leaving on a Friday afternoon and returning Sunday evening.
