We're heading to Philadelphia and New York the weekend of March 27th-29th to visit some of historically significant locations to the United Methodist Church, specifically John Street Church in New York and St. George's Church in Philadelphia!
We're meeting here that Friday afternoon around 430 PM to hit the road and we stay the night at a host church in Media, Pennsylvania. The following morning, we drive into Philadelphia to be a part of the Time Travelers program at St. George's where re-enactors take our students and adults through a whole presentation of what one of the first United Methodist churches looked like! We'll also have some time while we're there to stop by the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
That afternoon, we'll head up to New York where we're staying at a hotel in Manhattan. That evening, we'll have some time to visit Time Square as well as walk around Central Park for a little while before heading back to the hotel. On Sunday morning, we'll worship at John Street Church and learn about some of the events that led to its foundation. After the service, we'll walk over to the World Trade Center memorial for a bit and then head back home. Depending on traffic, we should get back around 7 PM Sunday evening.
A few things to note: please pack light. We only have so much space heading up there and back and will only have shower facilities Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning. I recommend everyone shower right after school on Friday afternoon before you meet here at the church. Also, we will be sleeping on the floor at our host church on Friday night so plan on packing a sleeping bag along with a TWIN SIZE air mattress or sleeping pad.
While there is no traditional charge for the retreat, we do ask that students bring $50 in cash on Friday to assist with tolls as well as food for the weekend. You may also want to bring along a small amount of spending money for touristy shopping in New York while we're there.
