Service Day 1: Gleaning!
Our first big service day for the school year is coming up on Saturday, October 6th and you're invited to come along! We're doing three service days throughout the year, two of which are required attendance for people going on one of our mission trips next summer and the first one is just around the corner. If you're unfamiliar, gleaning is a very old tradition from the Old Testament where farms designate certain areas for donation to those less fortunate. In our case, we're going to Miller-Marker orchard in Winchester to harvest apples for Feeding Friends, the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, and SERVE. Last year, we gathered 1700 lbs of apples and our goal this year is 2000!
We're meeting at the church at 7:15 AM on October 6th and plan to be back to the church around 2 PM that afternoon. While this is a youth event, families are invited to attend as well. It is worth noting, however, that parents who have NOT gone through our child protection policy training will only be able to drive their own family members. If you plan on driving yourself/your family, please indicate that in the NOTES section on the signup.
The week of the trip, I'll send out the waiver the orchard requires to all of the participants and you can just bring it that morning or email the filled out form back to me to print out. Everyone should also bring their own bagged lunch that we'll eat while we're out at the orchard!
We hope to see you there!
Please register for the trip HERE so we know how many people to plan for!
